Sleep in Heavenly Peace adopted the slogan and motto years ago that reads “No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town.” It was created, much like everything else with SHP, by a simple, off-the-wall comment from an unsuspecting volunteer. When this all started, we weren’t sure just what message we could use that would best convey our passion and mission. We kicked around all sorts of ideas ranging from “Beds for Babes,” which didn’t last very long, to “Because every child deserves a nice place to sleep.”

It was in this setting and brainstorming mode when my Sister-in-Law brought everything into focus for us when she recommended that we keep things simple like “No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town.” It rang in my ears and in my heart so well that it was one of those “duh” moments I often have with SHP now. It addressed the mission that we are focused on and shared some of the passion we have towards the mission. Since then, “No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town” has become SHP’s mission statement, with the ever-evolving change of making our town everyone's town.

With the recent excitement from Facebook’s series, Returning the Favor, and receiving over 950 New Chapter Requests (yes, you read that right), we are evolving again with a different word- “country”. It has been a humbling, busy, sleepless, stressful, but overwhelmingly wonderful couple of weeks reading, listening and talking to the people that were touched by the program and have determined in their hearts that they too want to see that “No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Country.” Their stories would inspire the most downhearted and troubled individual. We are privileged to know them and begin training them on what it means to be Chapter Presidents, how to run successful Chapters, and what their impact can be in their local community.

With new processes in place, designed and adjusted to meet this ever-growing movement of new SHP Chapters across the country, we will soon reach our goal of having an active Chapter in every state. We already have people taking time from their busy schedules to travel to Twin Falls, Idaho to get properly trained as Chapter Presidents. They will be equipped with all the tools necessary to run successful Chapters in their own communities. Because of their efforts and desires, SHP will be able to reach significantly more children each year.

Just think for a moment what that means. Think of all the kids that will be reached, all the dreams that will be saved, the confidence that will be restored, the worry and stress that will be relieved… As I have said from day one- SHP is bigger than just one person. It’s bigger than just one community. It’s bigger than just one State. What was once a simple motto has now erupted into a passionate mission statement, ever-evolving and neverending. It may be SHP’s mission statement, but it’s a mission statement meant for everyone to say and for everyone to believe. “No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town.”
